Rowan Drayke is a Boscan green mage of the Draculi clan and a member of White Sea. He serves in Kaleb Pradesh's vanguard as a primal elemental shock trooper. Rowan is the biological father of Connor Drayke and the mate of Thomas the Second.

Biography

Rowan had Connor through a hired surrogate and raised him in a happy, loving home. Connor develops into a powerful, highly skilled green mage in his own right under the upbringing of Rowan, described as the planet's foremost green mage.

Rowan and Thomas the Second grew close while working undercover during the operation against the Magic Control Council. (White Sea, Chapters 13 and 17.) The two became mated. After their bond, Thomas adopted Connor when Connor was ten years old. Connor loves both of his fathers.

Clan and Affiliation

Rowan belongs to the Draculi, a Boscan clan associated with the dragon and primal elemental magic. The clan's ancestral territory is a central island in the deep Grass Sea. Its history of warfare has left fewer than ten living members; Rowan and Emzadi Pradesh are listed among its notable members.

The Boscan registry places Rowan in White Sea as part of Kaleb's vanguard team. Kaleb's roster identifies him as a Primal Elemental Shock Trooper.

Magic and Abilities

Rowan is an accomplished, high-tier practitioner of green magic, described as a master of nature magic. Connor's biography identifies him as the planet's foremost green mage. His vanguard role also identifies his specialization in primal elemental combat.

Family and Relationships

White Sea story

Rowan works undercover in Sweorta with Thomas, using his green magic both for the investigation and to protect the people around him. The two draw close during the operation, before the MCC's collapse, and develop their mating relationship while making Connor part of their plans. (White Sea, Chapters 13, 17–18.)

In Whales, Rowan investigates conditions imposed on registered mages, including forced work, segregation and the disappearance of mages into transformation lacrima. He and Thomas help arrange medical care, safe accommodation and choices of a new home for the survivors. (White Sea, Chapters 33–40.)

Appearance and magical techniques

Rowan stands 6 feet 1 inch tall, with long wavy red hair carrying strawberry-blonde highlights, leaf-green eyes and a muscular build. A red rose tattoo with green leaves covers his left arm from shoulder downward. He favors worn jeans, fitted black tank tops and practical garden clothing.

An SS-class Green Mage, Rowan commands plant life from grass to trees, creates man-sized carnivorous roses and iron-strong vines, and possesses destructive power on the scale of a city. He is relaxed, friendly and deeply caring, with fierce loyalty to those he protects.

The Darkest Night (unpublished)

This section draws on The Darkest Night, an unpublished story. The opening document and numbered DN documents are manuscript sources, not published AO3 chapters. Ages, relationships and events below describe this earlier point in the characters' lives.

Restoring the magnolias

Rowan examines a twig Kittar brings from Enca and identifies poisoning as the reason its magnolias no longer bloom blue. He purifies and grows a tree in White Sea's garden, then supplies blooms to Laurie. Later he travels to Enca with Xally under the appearance of a tourist, restores trees and studies the damaged root network linking their decline with the loss of Guardian selection. (DN 3; DN 8–9.)

He establishes an alchemy garden for Xally and Sirius, uses plants during the coronation attack and records Curtis's crowning for White Sea's international broadcast. His contribution includes research, food and medicinal resources, protection and public communication. (DN 8–9.)
