The Darkest Night (unpublished)

This section draws on The Darkest Night, an unpublished story. The opening document and numbered DN documents are manuscript sources, not published AO3 chapters. Ages, relationships and events below describe this earlier point in the characters' lives.

The attack and the surviving prince

Curtis is fifteen and Enca's fifth-born prince when the Sanctuary's containment fails. Sirius rescues him from the Darksiders, and the healer's magic also revives the injured Syzgian. Curtis releases Black Miasma that identifies and destroys the invading Darksiders while Syzgian restores the wards and closes the rift. Curtis loses his parents and siblings and becomes the last surviving royal. He bears the marks of both Lloth and The Clockwork Queen. (Opening manuscript; DN 2.)

Three years to coronation

The Council conceals the scale of the disaster, blocks outside help and delays Curtis's accession. Laurie protects him, educates him and preserves his claim; Farron and Arman assist with his preparation for government, while Nuryev becomes a friend and fellow young ruler. Curtis chooses Anastasia after learning that her proposal specifically sought him, rather than one of his older brothers. (DN 2–3; DN 8.)

Curtis is crowned at dawn on his eighteenth birthday, three years after the Darkest Night. The ceremony takes place at Mystics and is broadcast internationally through White Sea. His first measures dissolve the Council of Elders, replace it with advisers drawn from Guardians, civilians and soldiers, restore access to the Guardian Quarter, reopen Enca to international assistance and end compulsory Council-arranged marriages. When Darksiders attack the arriving delegations, Curtis and allied forces defend the motorcade and docks. (DN 9.)

Rebuilding and Anastasia

Curtis supports the purification of Enca's magnolias, new Guardian selection, international rift assistance and settlement by willing Sevenese shifters. He approves an Encan White Sea branch and a clinic for Sirius and Xally. During the blood-moon undead crisis, his Miasma holds the line while the defenders withdraw and reorganize; fighting many kinds of undead requires more adaptation than targeting a single Darksider species. (DN 9; DN 13; DN 15.)

He refuses to abandon Anastasia after her abduction and abuse in Pergrand, changes the marriage rules that would otherwise obstruct their future, and joins her during medical treatment. Their wedding remains planned while she recovers; the later married profile belongs to a subsequent stage of their lives. (DN 13–15.)
