Cristine Gnome is an MCC general, head of its hunt forces, and the official responsible for health and magical research and development under Donagen Trumpell. She is half gnome and half human. A central perpetrator of the council's persecution and exploitation of mages, she escapes Sweorota during the regime's fall and becomes an internationally wanted fugitive.

Identity and background

The manuscript consistently calls her Cristine Gnome; Christine Gnome appears as a variant in Chapter 10. Earlier wiki setup used Kristina Gnome, which redirects here.

Born in Lugregio, Cristine moved to Sweorta with her wealthy family, who entered business and politics and became citizens. She grew up privileged and politically connected. The text describes her as shrewd, attractive, and ruthless, rising rapidly within the MCC. She has long brown hair and dark-brown eyes and stands approximately four feet tall in heels. She uses stools aboard her ship rather than having it customized for her height. Her actual age is not established; stolen rejuvenation treatments make her appear much younger.

MCC command and ideology

Cristine commands the Savage Dawn and the MCC's hunt forces. She pursues mages, oversees detention and research facilities, and benefits from the council's religious and political justification of persecution.

She regards mages as resources to be controlled rather than people entitled to freedom. She uses fear and propaganda to portray magical minorities as threats and justify capture and exploitation. Her support for the MCC's ideology coexists with contempt for Trumpell himself: privately she considers him foolish, but flatters him to retain authority and access to resources.

The creator identifies her portfolio as health and magical research and development. Her production of valuable healing preparations gives her considerable influence within the regime.

Lorence Fairstar and the Elixir of Youth

Cristine is directly responsible for the captivity, torture, experimentation, and abuse of Lorence Fairstar. She treats him as a possession and a source of profit rather than a child. She discovers that his White Miasma, released under extreme distress, can be collected and distilled into an Elixir of Youth.

The elixir reverses signs of aging and restores vitality. It grows out of research into portable healing preparations for soldiers and attracts wealthy MCC patrons. Cristine uses it herself, supplies the regime, and becomes determined to recapture Lorence after Austeel Fairstar rescues him.

She also justifies pursuing Lorence through his connection to the opposing Black Miasma mage. The paired nature of their magic offers the MCC a means of locating another powerful target. See House Fairstar for the family's resistance and exile.

Damascas raid and captive healers

Cristine takes advantage of political events in Pergrand to lead an unauthorized raid on Damascas. Her forces abduct mages from slave facilities and leave destruction behind. Among those taken is Ethandril Frostborn, an elven blood mage and healer whom she claims for her own experiments.

She tortures Ethandril and attempts to extract useful substances from his healing magic. She later targets Cristoff Pradesh, a Lunar Dragonkyn healer, during Fashion Week. Her interest is driven by the power and material value she imagines she can harvest from healers and dragons.

Undercover infiltration and later plans

Her security detail is penetrated by allied undercover agents, including Vander Pradesh, Rowan, Thomas, Arturo Jenaise, and Beck Fasion. She does not recognize their true loyalties. Her staff wear black and maroon, with lapel pins granting senior bodyguards broad facility access.

Cristine works with Peter Begsdeth and other MCC leaders on plans against Eventide Bay and the Academe Celestine. These operations seek to recover Lorence, seize magical people and resources, and extend MCC control. Following Begsdeth's death, she absorbs part of his authority and becomes increasingly influential around Trumpell.

Flight and UN bounty

During the UN confrontation, evidence publicly exposes both the Damascas attack and Cristine's crimes against Lorence. Trumpell initially promises her detention and a hearing. Recognizing that she is being abandoned, she gathers money and luggage and arranges a fast ship to flee.

She escapes the arrests that capture much of the MCC leadership. The UN declares her a worldwide fugitive with a bounty of twenty million gold. Licensed mercenary groups and slave syndicates are notified, and the Fairstar family is permitted to pursue her. Toby Fairstar and Ansel hunt for her aboard the Reaper. The Chapter 24 material still describes her as at large.

Personality

Cristine is vain, proud, acquisitive, manipulative, and sadistic. She enjoys dominance over captives and uses religious conviction and patriotism to rationalize cruelty. She values appearance, youth, wealth, and political influence. Her treatment of prisoners and staff reveals exploitation rather than the humanitarian mission the MCC publicly advertises.
