Summoning Magic
Summoning Magic is a distinct subset of Planar magic developed thousands of years ago when mages sought external sources of power. This arcane art revolves around the formation of magical contracts between a summoner and an extraplanar entity. While extraplanar beings—such as demons and other conscious spirits—frequently negotiate these pacts, summoners are not limited to extraplanar life; they can also forge contracts with specific individuals and ancient items.
Arcane laws enacted eons ago strictly govern item summoning. This legislation was passed after a rogue mage attempted to contract a high-power extraplanar war machine, nearly shattering the worldly balance. Consequently, summoned items must be cosmically bound to a constellation in the night sky. In contrast, extraplanar creatures must give explicit, conscious confirmation to validate a contract. Many entities actively search for summoners, while others wait for novice mages to initiate a random summoning sequence.
Tools of the Trade
Over the eons, the mediums used to store these mystical contracts have evolved significantly. Prior to the Holy War, all practitioners utilized identical identifiers: magical tattoos that glimmered softly on the skin.
However, during the conflict, the Dark Ones attempted to exploit summoners, and various demons used existing pacts to breach and overrun the realm of Ensla. To protect practitioners, mages engineered alternative storage methods. Tying contracts to physical objects allowed them to be hidden on a person or stored within a specialized requip space. While entities like the Fallen, the Dark Ones, and Demons can still sense the inherent magic, these physical mediums effectively conceal a summoner's identity from ordinary humans and rival mages.
Classifications
There are four known classifications of summoners. Celestial Summoning remains the most prevalent style, while the remaining three variants are exceptionally rare.
- Celestial Summoner: The most common and widely recognized variant. The vast majority of standard practitioners fall into this category.
- Weapon Master: A high-energy variant. Unlike Celestial Summoners, who are prone to irregular sleeping patterns and daytime lethargy, Weapon Masters possess immense stamina. They forge contracts with sentient weapons of myth, legend, or ordinary armaments capable of transcending their base forms.
- Venusian Summoner: Blessed by Venus, these kind-hearted practitioners possess an innate emotional resilience against dark influences. Coveted by the Order of Venus, their primary summons are exclusively Cherubs.
- Anubian Summoner: The rarest classification. Though they once constituted one-in-twenty summoners, their lineage was devastated during the Holy Wars. Today, an Anubian Summoner is born only once every few centuries. They are relentlessly hunted; adversaries of Anubis actively compete against the Anubian Order to locate and execute these children before they reach maturity.
