Overview

Asterholt is a country of vast open skies, rolling golden grasslands, ancient stone observatories, prosperous farming settlements and beautiful cities built to watch the heavens.

While other nations of Alderyn developed around ancient forests, towering mountains and great inland waters, Asterholt's civilization emerged upon wide, open country where the horizon seems impossibly distant.

There are few places in Asterholt where a traveler cannot look upward and see an enormous expanse of sky.

The people have spent thousands of years studying the stars.

They chart their seasons by the heavens, navigate by celestial patterns, build observatories into their city towers and maintain one of the continent's most sophisticated traditions of astronomy.

Yet Asterholt is not simply a nation of scholars.

Its wealth comes from the land.

Its great grasslands support enormous agricultural estates, grazing herds, orchards and communities of farmers whose traditions are as important as the country's royal institutions.

Asterholt's culture therefore rests upon two complementary beliefs:

The earth sustains life. The heavens show the way.

Neither is considered more important than the other.

The Land of Asterholt

The Golden Plains

Much of Asterholt consists of fertile grasslands extending for hundreds of miles.

The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, shallow river valleys, broad meadows and occasional rocky outcrops.

The central plains are particularly productive, supporting large grain harvests and grazing herds.

Centaurs and halflings have maintained settlements across these plains for generations, alongside human, satyr and other farming communities.

The Starfall Fields

Scattered across the country are ancient impact craters and deposits of unusual meteoric minerals.

Some craters have become lakes.

Others contain exposed stone that glitters beneath moonlight.

These places are considered culturally significant because the earliest Asterholti astronomers studied the relationship between falling stars and magical materials.

The largest meteorite deposits are protected by national mining laws.

The Western Plateaus

Asterholt's western highlands rise into broad, wind-swept plateaus.

Their elevation and relatively clear air make them particularly suitable for observatories.

Several of the oldest astronomical institutions are located here.

The Moonbarrow Hills

Low, grassy hills scattered with ancient stone circles, burial chambers and ancestral monuments.

The region is famous for its exceptionally dark night skies, where the stars appear brilliant against the horizon.

The Royal Family

High Queen Elara Asterwyn

The Star-Crowned Queen

Elara is the reigning monarch of Asterholt and head of House Asterwyn.

She is a composed, intelligent woman with dark auburn hair, silver-blue eyes and a dignified bearing.

Her reign has emphasized scholarly development, agricultural stability and stronger cooperation between Asterholt's many peoples.

Elara is a talented astronomer in her own right, although she considers the practical responsibilities of government considerably more important than ceremonial demonstrations of star magic.

Prince-Consort Theron Valecroft

The Keeper of the Western Roads

Theron comes from an old family of Asterholti landowners and caravan administrators.

He is practical, personable and particularly concerned with the welfare of rural communities.

Theron oversees several royal agricultural initiatives and works closely with the country's transportation guilds.

He is known for being more comfortable visiting farms and caravan stations than attending elaborate palace functions.

Crown Princess Lyssara Asterwyn

The Silver Dawn

Lyssara is the heir to Asterholt.

She is a talented celestial astronomer and possesses a natural affinity for starlight-based magic.

Unlike her mother, Lyssara is restless and fascinated by foreign civilizations.

She regularly travels throughout the kingdom and has expressed considerable interest in developing stronger academic relationships with the other nations of Alderyn.

Her greatest political challenge will be balancing Asterholt's ancient traditions with her own desire for change.

Government

The Star Crown

Asterholt is a constitutional hereditary monarchy.

House Asterwyn holds the throne, but the monarch is bound by the Covenant of Seven Lanterns, the foundational legal charter of the kingdom.

The Covenant establishes the rights of cities, rural communities, professional guilds and recognized peoples.

The monarch cannot arbitrarily seize private land, dissolve municipal governments or suspend the protections of citizenship.

The Assembly of Seven Lanterns

Representatives from Asterholt's seven major cities meet in Vesperhold.

The Assembly oversees taxation, commercial law, national infrastructure and the administration of public institutions.

Each major city selects civic representatives under its own charter, and the monarch presides over the Assembly's formal opening.

The system is intended to prevent the capital from dominating the entire country.

The People of Asterholt

Asterholt is a multiracial country whose population reflects centuries of settlement and trade.

Rather than identifying a particular ancestry as the definitive Asterholti race, the kingdom recognizes all citizens as Asterholti.

Major Peoples

People Cultural Presence
Humans Farming, scholarship, government, trade and urban communities
Halflings Agricultural communities, food production, hospitality and merchant families
Centaurs Plains settlements, herding, caravan communities and transportation
Satyrs Music, agriculture, historical communities and pastoral traditions
Mothfolk Nocturnal communities, astronomy, aerial navigation and many other professions
Gnomes Clockmaking, engineering, scholarship and invention
Dwarves Mining, construction, metallurgy and commerce
Elves Scholarship, farming, magic, the arts and established urban communities
Minotaurs Rural and urban communities, crafts, agriculture and military service
Goblinfolk Engineering, trade, rural settlements and diverse professional guilds

These are notable communities and traditions, not restrictions on professions or residence.

Mothfolk

One of Asterholt's more distinctive populations is its mothfolk.

These winged people commonly possess soft antennae, large eyes, delicate facial features and broad patterned wings.

Their society includes many nocturnal traditions.

Larkspire is particularly famous for its mothfolk communities.

Because Asterholt contains both diurnal and nocturnal peoples, several major cities maintain public services and commercial districts throughout the night.

Centaur Communities

Centaurs are especially common throughout Asterholt's open plains.

Their communities have influenced road construction, architecture, agriculture and military organization.

Public buildings in major cities generally include broad ramps, spacious chambers and appropriately sized facilities.

Centaurs are full citizens, not beasts of burden, and treating them as such is considered deeply insulting.

Astronomy and Star Magic

Asterholt's greatest scholarly tradition is the study of the heavens.

Its astronomers track:

  • celestial movements
  • constellations
  • lunar cycles
  • meteor showers
  • eclipses
  • magical atmospheric phenomena

The country's astronomical institutions have produced highly accurate calendars and navigational charts.

Asteromancy

Asterholt is especially famous for a magical tradition known as Asteromancy.

This is magic involving celestial light, astronomical alignment and the manipulation of certain energies associated with the night sky.

Its practitioners are called Astermancers.

Asteromancy is distinct from divine celestial magic and does not grant ordinary practitioners authority over fate or prophecy.

Common Asteromantic Techniques

Starlight Weaving — Gathering and shaping ambient celestial light into temporary magical constructs.

Astral Illumination — Producing soft, stable lights used in observatories, roads and public buildings.

Starward Barriers — Defensive wards strengthened through particular celestial alignments.

Celestial Calibration — Using astronomical phenomena to improve the accuracy of magical instruments.

Nightglass Enchantment — Charging specially prepared glass with stored magical illumination.

The Starroads

The Starroads are one of Asterholt's greatest engineering achievements.

They are long-distance highways marked by carved stone pillars and enchanted lanterns.

At night, the road markers produce a soft silver glow.

The system allows caravans to travel safely through otherwise dark grasslands.

Major Starroads connect:

  • Vesperhold
  • Farhaven
  • Goldmere
  • Brasswell
  • Larkspire
  • Emberfall
  • Moonbarrow

The Starroads are public infrastructure maintained through national taxation.

Religion and Philosophy

Asterholt has no single mandatory state religion.

Its inhabitants honor many gods associated with stars, navigation, agriculture, ancestors, knowledge and protection.

The royal family traditionally participates in public celestial ceremonies, but these are not exclusive to a particular deity.

The broader cultural philosophy holds that the heavens provide patterns without necessarily dictating an individual's choices.

One common teaching states:

“The stars can guide your journey. They cannot walk it for you.”

Agriculture and Economy

Despite its astronomical reputation, Asterholt's largest economic sector is agriculture.

The kingdom produces:

  • wheat
  • barley
  • oats
  • vegetables
  • fruit
  • wool
  • dairy
  • livestock

Goldmere and the surrounding countryside are particularly productive.

The country also exports high-quality precision instruments, enchanted glass, astronomical charts and metalwork.

Major Trade Products

Export Principal Source
Grain Goldmere and central plains

Festivals

The Night of Falling Stars

A major celebration held during a recurring meteor shower.

Communities gather outdoors for food, music, storytelling and astronomy.

The Golden Harvest

The principal agricultural festival.

Goldmere hosts enormous communal feasts, livestock competitions and harvest markets.

The Festival of Seven Lanterns

A national holiday commemorating the Covenant of Seven Lanterns.

Each major city lights a ceremonial lantern representing its place within the kingdom.

The Longest Night

A winter celebration particularly important among mothfolk and nocturnal communities.

Observatories, temples and public squares remain open throughout the night.

The Great Turning

Brasswell's annual celebration of invention, clockmaking and mechanical engineering.

Military

Asterholt's military is structured around defending its extensive road networks, agricultural heartland and urban centers.

The Starward Guard

The royal military responsible for national security.

The Gold Banner Companies

Professional infantry and defensive forces stationed throughout the kingdom.

The Plainstriders

Mobile patrol forces specializing in long-distance travel across open country. Centaur soldiers serve alongside other qualified troops.

The Silverwing Watch

Aerial scouts and reconnaissance specialists.

The Night Lantern Corps

Magically trained units responsible for illumination, defensive wards and nighttime operations.

The Roadwardens

Specialists responsible for protecting caravans, major trade routes and isolated settlements.

Current Political Issues

The Rights to Star-Metal

Mining companies are increasingly interested in extracting valuable meteoric materials from protected impact craters.

Emberfall supports controlled expansion, while Moonbarrow objects to excavation near ancient ceremonial sites.

Rural Representation

Goldmere and the farming communities argue that government investment increasingly favors observatories and urban institutions.

Nighttime Public Services

Larkspire's nocturnal communities are pushing for stronger guarantees that national services accommodate different biological schedules.

Foreign Academic Relations

Crown Princess Lyssara favors closer cooperation with scholars in Thalvoria, Korravahn and Nymarisse.

Some conservative courtiers are concerned about exposing sensitive magical research to foreign institutions.

Trade Route Security

Farhaven's merchant guilds have requested increased protection for long-distance caravans.

Relations with the Other Countries of Alderyn

Country Relationship
Thalvoria Exchanges botanical knowledge, medicinal resources and natural magic research
Korravahn Trades agricultural goods for mountain metals, engineering materials and specialized craftsmanship
Nymarisse Cooperates on water management, commercial transportation and astronomical navigation
Asterholt Acts as a center of overland trade, astronomy, agriculture and precision engineering

The four nations possess complementary resources, making peaceful commerce valuable even when their governments disagree.

Character of Asterholt

Asterholt is a country of golden fields and silver stars.

Its people live beneath a sky that seems almost impossibly large.

Their cities rise from rolling hills and ancient plains.

Their roads glow softly beneath the moon.

Their observatories study the heavens while their farmers cultivate the earth.

Centaurs cross the plains, mothfolk gather beneath illuminated towers, gnomes construct elaborate astronomical clocks, dwarves forge fallen star-metal and halfling families celebrate the turning of the agricultural seasons.

The royal family governs from Vesperhold, but the kingdom's strength comes from the cooperation of all seven cities.

Asterholt does not believe that studying the heavens makes the earth less important.

It believes that understanding both is necessary.

The stars guide. The earth sustains. We endure.
