This section draws on The Darkest Night, an unpublished story. The opening document and numbered DN documents are manuscript sources, not published AO3 chapters. Ages, relationships and events below describe this earlier point in the characters' lives.
Family recovery and the Black Manta
Rodney helps support Gigi and their grandmother after the loss of their parents and displacement from the Guardian Quarter. The family's surviving fishing boat is badly damaged, and their debts and employment arrangements leave them vulnerable. (DN 5; DN 8; DN 12.)
Vander offers the family his restored Black Manta in exchange for their old vessel, accepting token monthly payments when Rodney insists that they must pay. Rodney immediately sees how to use it for daytime tours, meals on the water and overnight fishing charters. Vincent supplies docking and building help, while Gaston offers housing and legal assistance with the exploitative contract. Rodney helps relocate other displaced boat-dwellers to Vincent's inlet. (DN 12–13.)
