Overview
Li Xing is the eldest daughter of Hishoko Xing and one of the older Xing twins, born alongside her sibling Xiao. She later rose to become the High Priestess of Ra, wielding powerful Solar Fire Magic closely suited to her intense temperament.
Where Hishoko learned to bury emotion beneath discipline and prophecy, Li never developed the same willingness to hide what she felt.
She is passionate.
She is proud.
She has a temper.
And she spent much of her youth knowing exactly how much her family had lost for a future centered around people who did not even know the Xing family had paid the price.
That knowledge shaped her relationship with the Pradesh family.
Li knew why her father had died.
She knew Ganier Roulet had survived because her father had gone on the mission that cost him his life.
She knew her mother had continued guiding events surrounding Arman and Zen Pradesh despite the immense toll prophecy had already taken on their family.
And she knew she was not allowed to explain any of it.
So when Li encountered members of the Pradesh family, she did not offer them the quiet patience her mother could summon.
She became testy.
Dismissive.
Sometimes openly rude.
Among the Xing family, Li was generally the most aggressive in expressing the resentment none of them were truly permitted to explain.
Hishoko chastised her for it repeatedly.
Often directly in front of the very Pradesh family Li resented.
It never stopped her for long.
Appearance
Li strongly resembles her mother.
She has long dark hair, dark eyes, and refined Stellan features inherited from the Xing line. Her expressions, however, are far more openly emotional than Hishoko's carefully controlled demeanor.
Where Hishoko watches in silence, Li glares.
Where Hishoko responds with a carefully chosen sentence, Li frequently says exactly enough to make it obvious she is irritated while still technically obeying whatever restrictions prevent her from explaining why.
Her ceremonial attire reflects her role as High Priestess of Ra.
She favors combinations of:
- white
- black
- gold
- deep red
- brilliant solar gold
Her priestly robes often feature sun discs, radiant rays, hawk imagery, and elaborate golden embroidery.
Unlike the cool celestial ornaments favored by Hishoko, Li's jewelry emphasizes the sun.
Common pieces include:
- golden solar discs
- red and amber gemstones
- broad ceremonial collars
- sunburst earrings
- gold armlets
- flame-shaped ornaments
When using Solar Fire Magic, her dark eyes catch a distinct gold-orange luminosity.
Personality
Hot-Tempered
Li inherited none of her mother's legendary patience.
She reacts quickly, speaks sharply, and has little tolerance for people she considers foolish, self-important, or deliberately obtuse.
Her temper does not make her incompetent.
Quite the opposite.
Li is extremely capable, and much of her frustration comes from expecting competence from everyone around her.
When someone fails to meet those expectations, they usually know.
Aggressively Dismissive
When Li cannot say what she actually thinks, she tends to become dismissive instead.
This became particularly apparent around the Pradesh family.
Because prophecy prevented her from revealing the Xing family's role in their history, Li often settled for clipped answers, sarcastic remarks, and an attitude suggesting she wanted the conversation finished as quickly as possible.
She could not tell them:
My father died because your family needed him to.
She could not explain:
My mother allowed it because Ganier had to survive.
Nor could she say:
Our family has spent years protecting a future built around yours.
So instead, Li behaved as though she simply did not like them.
It was easier.
Fiercely Loyal
Li's anger is rooted primarily in loyalty.
She loved her father.
She loves her siblings.
She loves Hishoko, even when the two clash viciously.
Her family has already sacrificed more than Li believes anyone should reasonably be asked to surrender.
Consequently, she is extremely sensitive to anything she interprets as another demand upon them.
Li may complain about her family herself.
Others should be considerably more cautious.
Protective
Li's protective instincts are particularly strong toward her younger siblings.
She may bully Romino herself, scold him, threaten him, and make his life unnecessarily difficult.
That does not mean she permits anyone else to harm him.
There is a significant difference between:
"My idiot little brother has broken into the archives again."
and
"Someone threatened my little brother."
People who fail to recognize that distinction tend to regret it.
Solar Fire Magic
Li is a powerful Solar Fire Mage.
Her magic is associated with radiant heat, sunlight, purification, judgment, and destructive fire.
Unlike ordinary flame magic, Solar Fire carries an intense celestial quality connected to Ra.
Her fire often manifests as brilliant gold, white-gold, or deep orange.
Solar Flame
Li can summon concentrated fire possessing extreme heat and magical intensity.
The flames are exceptionally effective against:
- corrupted magic
- undead creatures
- magical contamination
- dark enchantments
- certain spiritual entities
Radiant Judgment
A combat technique that condenses solar energy into a focused blast.
Rather than spreading like conventional fire, Radiant Judgment can be directed with exceptional precision.
Li particularly appreciates this technique because it allows her to make a point without necessarily burning down everything nearby.
Whether she always exercises that restraint is another matter.
Sunfire Mantle
Li surrounds herself in controlled Solar Fire.
The mantle functions both offensively and defensively, making close physical engagement extremely dangerous.
When angered, the mantle may begin appearing before she consciously decides to summon it.
Her family considers this a useful indication that a conversation should probably end.
Purifying Flame
As High Priestess of Ra, Li can use Solar Fire in a restorative ritual context.
The flames can burn away magical contamination, curses, or foreign spiritual influences without necessarily damaging the person affected.
This application requires considerably more control than ordinary combat magic.
Solar Lance
Li forms solar energy into concentrated spear-like projectiles.
These can be thrown at considerable distance and are particularly effective against magically protected targets.
Dawnfire
A gentler aspect of Solar Fire used in temple rites.
Dawnfire produces warmth and illumination without destructive heat and is associated with renewal, awakening, and Ra's life-giving aspect.
Its existence is occasionally surprising to people familiar only with Li's battlefield magic.
High Priestess of Ra
Li's appointment as High Priestess of Ra placed her among Stella's most important religious figures.
Her responsibilities extend beyond ceremonial worship.
She oversees:
- major rites dedicated to Ra
- temple administration
- solar clergy
- purification ceremonies
- religious education
- sacred artifacts
- magical protections associated with the temple
- interpretation of solar religious doctrine
Li takes the role extremely seriously.
She may be argumentative, but she is not careless.
Her faith emphasizes both the sustaining and destructive aspects of the sun.
To Li, Ra is not merely warmth and life.
The sun can nurture crops and illuminate darkness.
It can also scorch the earth.
She finds that balance deeply appropriate.
Childhood and the Death of Her Father
Li and Xiao were approximately four years old when the events surrounding Ganier Roulet and Arman Pradesh became critical.
Unlike Hatsuki and Romino, Li actually remembers her father.
She remembers his voice.
His mannerisms.
His relationship with Hishoko.
She remembers loving him.
That distinction profoundly affected her.
Her younger siblings inherited stories.
Li inherited memories.
She was therefore old enough to understand, over time, that the man she remembered had died on a mission necessary to preserve someone else's future.
Hishoko never encouraged Li to blame Ganier, Arman, or their family.
Li did not particularly care what her mother encouraged.
The logic remained simple in her mind:
Her father left.
Ganier survived.
Her father did not come home.
Even once Li became old enough to understand prophecy and the complexity surrounding the decision, understanding never completely erased resentment.
Li and Hishoko
Li's relationship with Hishoko is loving, combative, and frequently exhausting for both women.
Hishoko understands exactly where Li's anger comes from.
That does not mean she tolerates poor behavior.
When Li treated the Pradesh family disrespectfully, Hishoko corrected her.
Repeatedly.
Often publicly.
This created a familiar pattern.
Li would make a pointed remark.
Hishoko would look at her.
Li would recognize the look.
Li would continue anyway.
Hishoko would chastise her.
Li would technically apologize.
Then, eventually, she would do it again.
Why Hishoko Corrected Her
Hishoko refused to allow Li to punish people for decisions they had not knowingly made.
The Pradesh family did not understand what the Xings had sacrificed.
They could not be held responsible for information deliberately kept from them.
Li understood the argument.
She simply did not always care.
This was one of the fundamental differences between mother and daughter.
Hishoko could separate knowledge, responsibility, and emotion.
Li usually understood all three and remained angry anyway.
The Pradesh Family
Li's interactions with the Pradesh family were frequently strained.
She was never permitted to explain the real source of her irritation prior to the Archangel trials.
Consequently, members of the Pradesh family could reasonably conclude that the High Priestess of Ra simply disliked them.
Li did little to correct that assumption.
She tended to be:
- short with them
- skeptical of them
- unnecessarily blunt
- visibly irritated by certain questions
- quick to dismiss explanations she considered obvious
Her hostility was especially noticeable when conversations touched indirectly upon sacrifices made during the prophetic path.
Whenever Hishoko intervened, Li became marginally more polite.
Marginally.
The Secret of the Xing Family
The full truth remained concealed until after the trials of the Archangel Mages in Stella.
Only once those trials had concluded and the prophetic restrictions surrounding the events had changed did Li finally reveal why she had behaved the way she had.
For the first time, she could speak openly about:
- her father's death
- Hishoko's knowledge of the path
- Ganier's required survival
- the sacrifices made by the Xing family
- the role Zen Pradesh played in restoring Archangel Magic
- how long the Xings had been forced to remain silent
Li did not present the revelation gently.
Years of resentment did not suddenly turn into diplomatic phrasing simply because she was finally allowed to explain herself.
If anything, being able to speak openly made her more direct.
She wanted the Pradesh family to understand one thing:
Their future had not been preserved without cost.
And some of that cost had names.
Li and Romino
Li's relationship with her younger brother Romino Xing is particularly complicated because, for much of his life, Romino did not know she was his sister.
Romino had left Stella under circumstances deliberately constructed to resemble a kidnapping by a Boscan scholar.
Because of prophecy, secrecy, and the unusual path surrounding his upbringing, his connection to the Xing family was not revealed to him.
Li knew.
Romino did not.
This became especially entertaining—and infuriating—when Romino began breaking into the Daevale Stellan Archives.
Breaking into the Archives
Romino's Archive Magic created an almost insatiable appetite for information.
Restricted archives were therefore less an obstacle to him than an invitation.
Whenever Romino managed to breach the Daevale Stellan Archives, Li occasionally happened to be among the people dealing with the aftermath.
She gave him considerably more grief than strictly necessary.
As far as Romino knew, the High Priestess of Ra was simply an irritable Stellan authority figure who had developed a particularly personal dislike of his habit of breaking into restricted repositories.
Li allowed him to believe exactly that.
She could not say:
Stop breaking into the archives, little brother.
So instead she said the equivalent of:
If I find you in here again, I am personally throwing you out.
The distinction amused her considerably more than she admitted.
The Unspoken Family Connection
Li never revealed that they were siblings.
Not during his archive break-ins.
Not when she chastised him.
Not when she recognized their father's features in his purple hair and yellow eyes.
Romino remained unaware of his connection to Hishoko and the other Xing children until the Trials of the Archangels.
When the truth finally emerged, a number of Li's previous interactions with him suddenly acquired an entirely different meaning.
The unpleasant High Priestess who had repeatedly given him grief over the archives was, in fact, his older sister.
Li considered this retrospectively hilarious.
Romino's opinion was considerably less enthusiastic.
Li and Xiao
Xiao is Li's twin and the person most familiar with her temperament.
The two share the unique position of being the Xing children who genuinely remember their father.
Their responses to that loss differ, but the shared memory creates a bond distinct from their relationships with Hatsuki and Romino.
Xiao often understands what Li is actually angry about before she explains it.
This does not necessarily mean Xiao agrees with how she handles that anger.
Li and Hatsuki
Hatsuki belongs to the younger set of Xing twins.
Li is intensely protective of her.
As an older sister, Li can be demanding and occasionally overbearing, particularly because she remembers the circumstances surrounding their father's death while Hatsuki never knew him directly.
Li sometimes struggles with the realization that Hatsuki's understanding of their father comes primarily from the people who survived him.
Li and Romino After the Revelation
Once Romino learns the truth, Li does not suddenly become a gentle older sister.
Her behavior changes mostly in terminology.
Before:
"Get out of the archive before I have someone remove you."
After:
"Romino, if I catch my little brother breaking into one more restricted archive, I will set your coat on fire."
The threats become more familial.
The irritation remains genuine.
So does the affection.
Li takes a certain amount of pleasure in finally being able to openly claim him as her brother after years of pretending otherwise.
She also makes it abundantly clear that being related to the High Priestess does not constitute permission to break into Stellan archives.
Romino predictably considers this an unreasonable interpretation of family privilege.
The Trials of the Archangel Mages
The Trials of the Archangels in Stella represent a major turning point in Li's life.
The trials finally brought together many of the prophetic threads Hishoko had spent decades protecting.
Archangel Magic stood at the center of the future for which the Xing family had sacrificed so much.
For Li, the trials were both vindication and confrontation.
She could finally see the outcome toward which her mother had been working.
But she could also finally say aloud what reaching that outcome had cost.
After the trials, secrets that had governed her behavior could begin to fall away.
Romino learned the truth about his family.
The Pradesh family learned why Li had treated them with such hostility.
Li no longer had to swallow every explanation behind a clipped response.
It did not make her less angry.
It made her anger honest.
Relationship with Arman Pradesh
Li's relationship with Arman Pradesh becomes especially complicated after Hishoko's eventual feelings for him become apparent.
Li had spent years associating the Pradesh family with sacrifices her own family had been forced to make.
Then her mother fell in love with Arman.
Li was not immediately delighted by this development.
However, she eventually recognized something important.
Arman did not ask Hishoko to sacrifice her husband.
He did not create the prophecy.
He had lost people too.
And unlike the distant prophetic figures Li resented as a child, Arman had become a person she actually knew.
Once Hishoko and Arman's feelings became increasingly obvious, Li eventually joined the other children in pushing the two toward acknowledging the relationship.
This did not prevent Li from making Arman's life difficult occasionally.
It simply changed the nature of the difficulty.
Faith and Ra
Li's devotion to Ra suits her temperament exceptionally well.
She identifies strongly with the dual nature of the sun.
The sun nurtures.
The sun reveals.
The sun purifies.
The sun also burns.
Li does not believe compassion requires softness.
Nor does she believe judgment requires cruelty.
Her faith teaches her that power must be directed toward a purpose.
This principle has helped her control her temper more successfully as she has matured.
It has not eliminated the temper.
Even her clergy would consider that miraculous.

Sample Dialogue
"I understand perfectly well that it wasn't their choice. That does not mean I am obligated to smile about it."
"Mother, I was polite."
A pause.
"I did not set anyone on fire."
"Ganier lived. My father didn't. I know why. I've always known why. Understanding it does not make me grateful for the arrangement."
"Do you have any idea how irritating it is to know exactly why you're angry with someone and be forbidden from telling them?"
"Romino, get out of the archive."
A pause.
"No, I don't care how interesting the restricted section is."
"Yes, I knew you were my brother. No, I wasn't allowed to tell you. And yes, I absolutely enjoyed making you think the High Priestess had developed a personal grudge against you."
"You broke into Daevale three times."
Romino protests.
"The fact that you were only caught twice does not improve your argument."
"My mother followed prophecy. I had the luxury of being angry about what it cost."
"Ra gives warmth and life. He also gives us deserts. Remember that before confusing sunlight with gentleness."
"We sacrificed people too. You simply weren't allowed to know their names yet."
Character Arc
Li's story is fundamentally about resentment becoming understanding without becoming forgiveness.
As a child, she knew her family had paid an enormous price for a future involving people who did not understand their connection to the Xings.
As an adult, she understood why Hishoko had made those decisions.
That knowledge did not magically remove her anger.
Instead, Li had to learn that she could recognize the necessity of a sacrifice while still grieving what was lost.
She also had to accept that the Pradesh family could not be blamed for secrets deliberately withheld from them.
The Trials of the Archangels finally allowed Li to stop pretending that her hostility lacked a reason.
She could explain her father's death.
She could acknowledge what Hishoko had done.
She could tell Romino he was her little brother.
And she could finally separate the people standing in front of her from the prophecies that had dominated her childhood.
Li does not become soft.
She does not stop having a temper.
She does not suddenly decide that everything happened exactly as it should have.
What changes is that she no longer has to express grief as unexplained hostility.
The High Priestess of Ra can finally name what burned her.
And once Li Xing is permitted to speak plainly, everyone around her discovers that her silence had probably been protecting them more than they realized.
Motto
“The sun does not ask for permission to burn.”
