Enca is an archipelagic island nation situated off the coast of the continent of Anubia (historically classified in regional trade manifests within Ishgar). Geographically composed of numerous topographically distinct islands, the country features a Cajun and Creole-inspired landscape characterized by vibrant coastal sands, extensive tropical swamplands, and a highly private, family-centric social framework.
Enca is highly self-sufficient and globally renowned for its native agricultural mastery, custom weapons manufacturing, and complete religious devotion to a vast spiritual pantheon. Gepolitically, Enca operates entirely outside the jurisdiction of the Magic Control Council of Sweorta (MCC) due to its formidable domestic weapons industry and natural geographic barriers.
Geography and Topography
The Encan archipelago is composed of specialized ecological zones that dictate domestic industry and local navigation:
The Main Island
The largest landmass features contrasting shorelines. The northern coast is composed of pale blue, shimmering sands that reflect ambient light. Conversely, the southern coast features deep cerulean sands that blend seamlessly into the ocean line. The interior of the main island is dominated by dense, hazardous swamplands that require active maintenance to prevent them from encroaching into civilian sectors.
The Sacred Lands
The Sacred Lands form a restricted ritual zone. The early country reference locates them on the middle island, while this article’s later Sanctuary history concerns a separate protected landscape. Legal entry into this zone is strictly prohibited to the general populace, with access restricted exclusively to the highly revered **Speakers of the Loa**. Non-clergy citizens traditionally enter these sacred borders no more than four times across their entire lifespan, primarily to undergo mandatory religious rites of passage and marriage ceremonies.
The Sanctuary Island
The smallest island functions as a completely isolated tropical wildlife sanctuary, featuring dense jungle canopy, localized marsh pockets, and a strictly protected population of dangerous flora and fauna.
- The Clockwork Enclosure: Deep within the interior of the Sanctuary lies a massive, near-indestructible clockwork enclosure. Engineered eons ago by The Clockwork Queen (co-ruling Head Goddess of the Loa) following a technomantic pact with the primeval protector Enca the Great, this facility utilizes automated locking mechanisms to permanently seal and stabilize a volatile planar rift, preventing foreign exploitation.
- The Vault of the Fallen Vanguard: The Sanctuary historically served as the hidden nursery for Damshiel, the son of the first Evening Star Archangel. After being salvaged from tragedy by Anubis and Baron Samedi, Damshiel was raised here in secret before his eventual capture by the Otho Empire, later returning to the realm to intentionally fall from grace and wed Lloth, the Lady of Spiders.
- Encan Pythons: The island is inhabited by a native, hyper-extended breed of python that significantly dwarfs the size of the standard pythons found on the main island.
- Spotted Swamp Panthers: The sanctuary preserves a highly rare, distinct breed of swamp panther characterized by vivid white spots stretching across its coat, contrasting with the nearly invisible black spots of continental panthers.
Government and Administrative Structure
Enca is administered under a traditional constitutional dual monarchy consisting of a King and Queen. Executive governance, civil infrastructure, and state policies are currently directed by King Curtis Misericorde alongside his Queen.
The Spiritual Shadow Seat
While the dual monarchs handle the visible logistics of the state, an equal tier of absolute authority is held by the Supreme Loa Priestess. Operating from the Sacred Lands, her office is tasked with interpreting the will of the pantheon. True to her secretive vow, she remains entirely silent regarding the true, primordial nature of the cosmic entities she serves, acting as a permanent barrier between foreign inquiries and the secrets of the realm.
Elite Lineages
Enca is administered under a traditional dual monarchy consisting of a King and Queen. Executive governance and state policy are currently directed by King Curtis Misericorde alongside his Queen.
Domestic industry and trade are heavily influenced by two historic, powerful aristocratic lineages:
- The Gousselle Family: An ancient lineage of master weaponsmiths who trace their verbal genealogy directly back to the historical Holy Wars, during which they were tasked with forging the armaments to defend Enca's shores. In the contemporary era, the family functions as premium engineers, traveling the world to locate rare, high-grade metals to craft highly intricate, advanced firearms of varying calibers.
- The Pwav Family: Oligarchical landowners who control the largest agricultural plots in the nation. The family cultivates regional hot peppers alongside fruit, vegetables and other produce; the country reference identifies a major holding rather than an exclusive monopoly.
Economy and Commerce
The Encan economy is highly sustainable, relying on strict demarcation boundaries to separate international commerce from domestic life:
- Tourism and Separation: Every major settlement is divided into two distinct zones. The outer districts are highly polished and tailored specifically for foreign tourists and visitors, acting as a structural barrier. The inner sectors are strictly private, reserved exclusively for the local population.
- The Hot Pepper Export: Enca's primary legal agricultural export is its native hot peppers, which grow year-round due to the persistent equatorial warmth. The early country reference ranks these peppers among the top ten hottest in Ishgar.
- Culinary Industry: Local food relies heavily on intense, high-heat spices. The domestic market also drives a lucrative trade in exotic meats harvested from the ocean and predatory entities that venture too far from the interior swamps.
Culture and Religious Rites
Encan culture balances a highly welcoming, festive public attitude with an intensely private domestic life. Evenings are traditionally spent entirely within family units, gathered around fire pits to pass down oral histories and strengthen kinship bonds.
The Midfall Festival
The largest public event on the calendar is the week-long **Midfall Festival**, hosted annually in the capital city of Penni. This event represents the peak of Enca's tourism sector, featuring large-scale public feasts, alcohol consumption, and animal displays. On the second day of the festival, a singular grand parade takes place where organizers throw highly coveted, hand-crafted glass and wooden beads into the crowds. These items are viewed as powerful symbols of good luck for the coming year. Because only a few thousand are manufactured annually, participants frequently engage in physical altercations to secure them.
Marriage and Social Conditioning
To preserve long-term kinship networks and community stability, Encan children traditionally learn the identity of their future spouse by the age of eight. This systemic arrangement ensures that the two individuals are given a decade to build mutual understanding, respect, and deep relational bonds before legally finalizing their marriage on the Sacred Island.
Theological Framework and Lineages
The spiritual life of Enca centers entirely on the worship of The Loa, a vast, highly interconnected pantheon of ancestral, primordial forces and ancient ascended shifters rather than celestial sky deities. Family bloodlines are tracked through generations based specifically on which individual Loa has blessed the lineage:
- The Pwav Agriculture: The extensive hot pepper plots managed by the Pwav family are spiritually tied to the winding swamp waterways governed by Damballah, the Great White Snake, and protected by Maman Noire, who punishes poachers without mercy.
- Marital Contracts: The strict traditional engagement of children by age eight is overseen by Maman Brigitte (consort to the Baron), who governs judicial oaths and the threads of destiny, alongside the cosmic goddess Venus, who oversees the activation of instinctual bloodline links.
Magic Classifications and Restrictions
The deployment of magic within Enca is strictly regulated by environmental factors and traditional state legislation:
- The Swamp-Control Matrix: The kingdom relies on a specialized division of **Green Mages** who use advanced flora manipulation to physically control the boundaries of the swamps, keeping the aggressive wilderness from consuming civilian infrastructure.
- Industrial Metallurgy: The manufacturing sector is heavily supplemented by **Maker Mages** and specialized **Metal Mages** who telepathically refine raw mineral materials to support the Gousselle firearms foundries.
- The Same-Sex Magic Ban: Due to rigid generational demographics regarding continuity, Encan law strictly bans the practice or deployment of any specialized arcana or magical system that explicitly requires a same-sex partner or mate to function.
Major Plot Points and Demographics
- Homosexuality Rates: Homosexuality is exceptionally rare within the native Encan bloodlines, occurring statistically only once every three to four generations.
- Cultural Acceptance: Encan society is highly accepting and non-discriminatory toward homosexual relationships among foreign travelers, merchants, and tourists. However, due to strict traditional family structures, they do not tolerate homosexuality within native Encan lineages.
The Summoner Anomaly
Due to the historical trauma surrounding the systematic hunting of arcane practitioners during ancient conflicts, true Summoners are completely non-native to Enca. The historical restriction was intentionally engineered by Baron Samedi, the absolute master of the dead and the only Anubian Summoner born during the catastrophic Holy Wars.
Following his fated union with Adelaide (daughter of Enca the Great), which produced the last native historical summoner, Julienne Vilatte, the Baron utilized his divine will to manipulate the foundational magic of the land. He completely locked summoning magic out of the regional magical pool for newborns, a birth registry ban that remained unbroken for centuries. This ancient restriction was only lifted upon the fated mating of the Encan Evening Star Archangel, Tanis Trahain, resulting in the birth of Esme Trahain, the first native summoner of the modern era.
Island traditions and protected landscapes
The early Re: Enca country reference organizes the nation into a main island, a middle sacred island and a smaller wildlife sanctuary. This is a historical description of its principal zones, rather than a replacement for the modern archipelago map. In that account, the sacred lands are a separate island used for rites and marriages, with access normally restricted to the Speakers of the Loa or those attending a rite.
The main island's pale northern sands and cerulean southern beaches contrast with its inland swamps. The sanctuary preserves large Encan pythons, white-spotted swamp panthers and plants sought by alchemists. Native protection of these animals and plants is a recurring part of the country's relationship with foreign visitors and illegal collectors.

The Lands of the Dires and Enca's sacrifice
The Lands of the Dires presents an ancestral account of Enca's origins. Before the islands settled in the sea, Dire protectors watched over humanity from flying lands. A demon later used a captive Void Angel to tear open a Dark Plane gateway at a sacred source of life magic. The breach threatened both the islands and the wider world.
Enca the Great answered by binding her magic to the land and its people. Her call made protection of the realm a shared spiritual duty. The defenders contained the breach through a labyrinth of smaller portals around the original gateway. At its heart stood a life-filled clearing and a tree with bright green leaves and black bark, subsequently known as the Heart of the Sanctuary or Heart of Enca.
In this account, changes in the tree's leaves and the rising tempo of Enca's song warn the blood-linked defenders of pressure against the Sanctuary. The song calls the Guardians to resist renewed incursions. The narrative also associates the sacrifice with an alteration in female Dire magic and longevity, a change whose original cause was no longer widely understood by later generations.
The clearing can heal those brought there while still alive; the account does not describe it as reviving the dead. During the Holy Wars, the people's struggle against the Sanctuary breach continued alongside the wider conflict. Over the ages, the woman Enca's identity faded into myth even as her land and its protective call endured.

Agriculture, household life and local crafts
Year-round warmth allows repeated harvests of peppers, fruit and vegetables. The Pwav holdings combine ordinary produce with the intensely hot regional peppers; the country reference describes these peppers as among Ishgar's ten hottest, rather than establishing a measured world ranking. Seafood and animals taken from the edges of the swamps supplement the diet.
Loa festivals bring shared food into the marketplaces, while evenings commonly center on family gatherings around fires, meals and oral storytelling. Public hospitality coexists with privacy: visitor districts allow outsiders to enjoy the country without unrestricted access to local homes or dangerous swamp routes.
The week-long midfall festival is held in Penni, spelled Pinné in the early reference. Its second-day parade distributes a limited yearly supply of handmade glass and wooden beads, treasured as good-luck tokens for the year ahead.
The Gousselle Family's weaponsmithing business, Gousselle Armaments, belongs to this wider maker tradition. The early document uses the variant surname Guiselle; the established family spelling is retained on the wiki. Its short account of the family's remembered heritage does not supersede the fuller family history.
