Shadowquip Magic
The way it works
Magic often has main bases. Shadow Magic is no different, there is a generic brand of it most Shadow Mages use then there are specialized branches of the magic that can often be far more powerful but much more difficult to control and master than the main branch.
Shadowquip magic was called "Void Angel" magic during the Holy Wars. The church of light wiped out the mages who held it, except for a small pocket hidden from society on one of the nomadic Islands of the Grass Sea. The Husen Clan of Bosco carried the magic in their genes and were still having the magic show up. Shadowquip magic can not be learned, a mage must be born with it because of the integration of the light in the soul to how it works. It can not be gifted, must be learned and developed from birth due to it's complexity and the immense amount of will it takes to remain in possession of ones mind.
Shadowquips can equip shadows, turn them into anything from clothes to weapons, see through them, manipulate them into almost anything. Beyond that, a shadowquip can push into the deep shadows beneath surfaces, open gates into the voids between planes of existence. The beings that call those voids home, shades, demons, even massive chaotic Gods like Apep dwell within the voids and Shadowquips can move through voids, dodge and outmaneuver what lives there, but always...always, the shades and dark things of the voids push at them seeking to control them, to use them to open gates into living worlds so they can feast upon the living.
The Husen children born with the magic, stabilize if they can survive until old enough to bond with the clans sacred animals, the flying Havati serpents, which are Dragonkin. The serpents dwell then within the mage, emerging through vivid tattoos that form in the mages skin to work with them, fight with them and protect them.
The Husen clan was known for their Shadowquips, and feared. When Shadowquips lose the fight for their will, Shades use them to enter the living world and feed. They became hated, and three other clans of the Grass Sea finally attacked Husen Island, planning to kill all the people and the Havati serpents but, the last Shadowquip born, then only a few years old, was convinced to release shades onto the island. His own parents, his own people were killed but so were the invaders and the island and serpents were saved. The last survivor, Vander, was adopted by Arman Pradesh and raised in his home. He grew to adulthood, mastering the magic and finally, at 22, took his Rite of Serpents and was bound to two Havati serpents. A black female named Meala, and a red male named Searsha.
Vander then stabilized, becoming the first Shadowquip in centuries to reach adulthood and do so. The most notable attacks and spells of the magic are related to their ability to mold shadows.
Shadow Chain...A scorpion tail chain, heavy, with a long deadly barbed blade at the end, this chain in the hands of a trained mage can move in any direction, following it's mages directions to attack enemies.
Shade summon....The mage calls forth shades of the void, anyone they have eye contact with will be possessed by a shade and devoured from the inside, left a dried out husk.
Void Jump.....The mage gates through the voids. In upper level mastery the mage can create anchor points anywhere and can instantly jump to those places, otherwise they travel the voids, crossing massive distances in seconds. The travel is dangerous, icy cold.
Second Sight....When their eyes are closed or covered a Shadowquip can still see through any and all shadows around them.
Resistance to magic cancellation and suppression. A Shadowquip can access their magic through shadows, if there is any shadow present within range of the Shadowquip, no matter what devices or spells are on the mage, they can access magic. It is impossible, unless placing them in a room where shadows will not fall...to cut a Shadowquip off from their magic. On the flip side, that means...unstable Shadowquips never get relief from the onslaught of the shades in the voids.
